Intestinal Disorders - Hemorrhoidectomy
Piedmont General Surgery Associates provides patients with hemorrhoidectomy in Rock Hill, SC. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum that can cause itching, bleeding, and pain. Many hemorrhoids can be treated with lifestyle changes and non-prescription medications, but when hemorrhoids become a quality of life issue, surgery may become necessary.
Patients who are good candidates for hemorrhoid surgery may include:
- Patients who have unsuccessfully tried less invasive methods
- Patients with severe or extremely uncomfortable hemorrhoids
- Patients with internal hemorrhoids that have become strangulated
- Patients with external hemorrhoids that are swollen due to a clot
- Patients who have both internal and external hemorrhoids
- Patients who need surgery for other anorectal conditions
Other considerations for hemorrhoid surgery will include the patient’s age, overall health, and how well they are expected to react to surgery.
A hemorrhoidectomy is a surgery used to remove internal or external hemorrhoids. The types of hemorrhoidectomy procedures include excisional hemorrhoidectomy and stapled hemorrhoidectomy. An excisional hemorrhoidectomy removes the hemorrhoidal tissue by cutting it out, and then either closing the wound with sutures (closed excisional hemorrhoidectomy) or leaving the incisions open (open excisional hemorrhoidectomy).
A stapled hemorrhoidectomy removes a portion of the hemorrhoidal tissue, and the remaining tissue is lifted back up into the anal canal and stapled into place. While this procedure usually causes less post-operative pain and has a shorter recovery time than the excisional procedure, it is not effective for larger external hemorrhoids, and patients tend to experience a recurrence of hemorrhoids more often with the stapled procedure.
