What is Endometriosis?

Approximately 10% of women suffer from this uncomfortable and sometimes painful condition in which the lining of the uterus – called the endometrium – begins to grow outside of the uterus. When this occurs, areas such as the ovaries, bowels, and pelvis may form endometrial tissue. As a result, during hormonal changes including your monthly menstrual cycle, this endometrial tissue behaves in the same way it does within the uterus by growing, thickening and breaking down; however, it has no place to go and becomes trapped in the pelvis. These areas become inflamed and cab cays cysts, scar tissue, and adhesions to form.

That said, it is important to be aware of the presence of fibroids so they can be monitored and so symptoms can be tracked if they do occur. They may cause heavy bleeding and severe pelvic pain and could impact fertility.
