Turn to Carolina OB/GYN in Rock Hill, SC, for the compassionate medical treatment you deserve. We treat pelvic floor disorders including pelvic prolapse so you can move forward in life with comfort and confidence.

What is Pelvic Prolapse?

Your pelvic organs are supported by tissue and muscles. They include the uterus, bladder, small bowel, and rectum. Pelvic prolapse occurs when these tissue and muscles become weak or loose, causing one or more of the pelvic organs to droop. They may press against the vagina or even descend out of it.

Symptoms of Pelvic Prolapse

You may experience no or very minimal symptoms or you could experience any combination of the following:

  • Feeling like something is falling out of the vagina
  • Discomfort during sex or physical activity
  • Feeling of pressure in the pelvis
  • Urinary incontinence or consistent need to urinate
  • Constipation
  • Spotting or bleeding
  • Low backache

Causes for Pelvic Prolapse

This condition is caused by increased pressure on the abdomen. The most common cause is pregnancy, labor, and childbirth because these events put a lot or strain on the pelvic floor. It can also occur as a result of:

  • Obesity
  • Constipation
  • Chronic cough
  • Cancer in the pelvic organs
  • Hysterectomy

Diagnosis & Treatment for Pelvic Prolapse

To diagnose this condition, we will discuss your symptoms with you, if you are having any, and conduct a routine pelvic exam. It may be necessary to have imaging taken of your pelvis such as an ultrasound or CT scan. Pelvic prolapse is very treatable. Treatment will vary depending on the severity of your symptoms and may include:

  • Kegels to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor.
  • Dietary changes that include more fiber to help avoid constipation.
  • Inserting a mechanical device called a pessary into the vagina to provide support.
  • Surgery to repair the muscles and tissue.
  • A hysterectomy to remove the uterus.

Our surgeons are adept at providing surgical repair for pelvic prolapse in order to build support within your pelvic floor and mend the prolapse. Whenever possible, we use the most minimally invasive approach although we make our recommendations based on your individual symptoms and circumstance.
