Peripheral Arterial and Venous Ultrasound
What Is a Peripheral Arterial and Venous Ultrasound?
This non-invasive test uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the arteries and veins in your arms and legs. It helps evaluate blood circulation and identify any blockages or vascular concerns.
Why Is This Exam Performed?
Your healthcare provider may suggest this test to:
- Identify narrowed or obstructed arteries
- Detect conditions like varicose veins or deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Evaluate blood flow issues in the limbs
- Assist in planning vascular treatments or surgeries
What Happens During the Procedure
- A clear gel is applied to the skin over the area being examined
- A handheld device (called a transducer) is moved across the skin to capture real-time images
- The test is completely painless and typically lasts between 30 and 60 minutes
- No special preparation is required beforehand
Reviewing the Results
Your provider will analyze the ultrasound images to determine if there are any circulation problems. If necessary, they may recommend additional tests or treatment options.
